| "Gateway Hosts First Annual Summer Placement Fair" February 2, 2005 Representatives from more than 25 organizations and approximately 250 high school students attended the first Annual Gateway Summer Placement Fair held at City College on Monday, January 31, 2005. The event represents the Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education’s ongoing commitment to providing the full range of academic opportunities to its students. Belynda Rivers, the Director of College Relations and Internship Placements for the Gateway Institute, organized the fair, which included a program for 11th and 12th graders in the morning and 9th and 10th graders in the afternoon. “New York City has some amazing summer programs,” explains Ms. Rivers, “and we want to make sure that every Gateway student has access to them.” The programs vary in scope and duration. Some programs, such as the Yale Medical School Student Medical Education Program (SMEP), are unique to Gateway. Since partnering with Yale Medical School in 1997, Gateway selects up to 25 qualified graduating seniors to attend the a six to eight week intensive summer program preparing students for medical school. It is a program that is otherwise open only to college-level students. Some programs, like cancer research at Roswell Park, are highly selective and other programs, like volunteer positions at local hospitals, welcome all interested and energetic candidates. In addition to students, the Gateway Summer Placement Fair also attracted parents and several alumni. According to parent volunteer Vanessa Sparks, whose daughter Tiffany was among the first classes to graduate from the Queens Gateway Health Professions Secondary School in 2000, parental participation is a key component of Gateway’s success. “I am delighted to see the parents here today and to talk to them about what it means to be involved as a Gateway parent. My daughter graduated from Clark University in four years and is going to pursue a master’s degree in psychology at Columbia.
