Original Partners
City University of New York (CUNY)
CUNY has been a partner from the beginning and in 2000 initiated the creation of the Gateway Institute for Pre-College Education, recognizing Gateway's outstanding record in preparing New York City high school students for entry into four-year colleges without need for remediation. CUNY's involvement dates back to 1979 when the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education supported the development of the Bridge to Medicine Program for high school seniors, a precursor to the Gateway to Higher Education Program that began in 1986.
New York City Department of Education
The Department of Education has also been a partner from the start in Gateway's efforts to work with a wide spectrum of New York City students. The Department of Education facilitates the special features of the Gateway Program and provides a Gateway Coordinator at each Gateway high school, professional teacher development, and other program supports.
Mount Sinai Medical Center
A partner with Gateway since 1992, Mount Sinai and its affiliate Queens Hospital Center immediately began working with the New York City Department of Education to establish a stand-alone Gateway high school with a focus on medicine and health professions. The Queens Gateway Secondary School for Health Professions, serving students in grades 7-12, was opened in September 1994 in cooperation with the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation.
Additional Partners
In addition to working with outstanding teachers and coordinators, Gateway recognized early on that students needed access to exceptional enrichment opportunities through after-school programs and summer internships and placements. Over the years, Gateway has become a trusted source for excellent students who regularly participate in highly competitive programs. The following represents only a fraction of the opportunities that Gateway provides:
American Museum of Natural History
In 2001, a team of Gateway teachers worked with museum staff to prepare the exhibit and learning labs for “The Genome Revolution.” Gateway has an ongoing relationship with AMNH for the benefit of students and teachers.
Association of Minority Health Professions Foundation
Gateway students are invited to attend, at no cost, the annual American Minority Health Professions (AMHP) Biomedical Symposium. Since the partnership started in 2004, approximately 100 Gateway students have attended the conference.
Bellevue Shadow Program
Since 1992, more than 100 Gateway students have “shadowed” doctors to become familiar with the process of medical education and experience direct contact with the lives of doctors working in a New York City public hospital.
Cold Spring Harbor
In 1995, Gateway initiated its first DNA lab at Brooklyn Tech for Gateway students. Today, there are centers serving students and teachers throughout New York City.
Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University
Each summer, selected Gateway students pursue a specially designed introduction to advanced mathematics. The course is taught by NYU faculty at Courant.
Jackson Laboratories in Bar Harbor, Maine
Gateway students attend this highly selective and competitive eight-week program which pairs a scientist and a student in cancer research.
Yale Medical School
Since 1997, Yale reserves a remarkable 25 out of 100 slots for Gateway students to attend a six week summer course.
